Žitná 14 – history of the building

This historical building, located on Žitná 14 street, is also known as house „U Pešinských“ or „U bílého lva“ („By the white lion“). The building was constructed prior to 1850 and is situated in the centre of Prague, Nové Město district near Karlovo náměstí or Václavské náměstí. The building used to be a monastery and has courtyards which were originally stables. The house became a 2-story apartment building circa 1861. Currently it has four floors and three basement floors. The house is known mainly for its famous resident, Czech composer, Antonín Dvořák,. He lived and worked here from 1877 until his death in 1904. Other famous residents were Jaroslav Věštír, artist, and prof. Josef Mařatka, sculptor. Antonín Dvořák has a statue on the house front and Jaroslav Věštír and prof. Josef Mařatka have memorial plaques there. In July 2010 the house was declared a cultural monument. In 2012 the neo-renaissance facade was repaired.

Holešovice is a district in north Prague situated on the Vltava river plain and constitutes the main part of district 7 Prague (a minor part that belongs to District 1 Prague). In the past it was a heavily industrialized suburb; today it is home to the main site of the Prague's National Gallery in Veletržní palác, National Technical Museum, and a convention centre, Výstaviště Praha.
